Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy involves small magnetic pulses delivered to certain areas of the brain involved in mood control and depression. TMS is more successful than any other drug used to treat depression today. It is as safe as an MRI. TMS is also safe for pregnant women or women wanting to get pregnant or who are breastfeeding.

What does a typical TMS treatment look like?

First a screening for the type of the depression will take place by a physiologist, psychiatrist to document the depression. In the first session we will identifiy the specific area of the brain that responds to the TMS therapy. Once we identified the specific area you will receive 35 minutes of stimulation every day, for 5 days, for 6 weeks. In the first couple of seesion TMS treatment can cause some minor discomfort. You will wear ear phones as the machines is rather loud.

I am pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Can I be treated by TMS therapy?

TMS has a lower side effects profile as any traditional depression drugs on the market today. Depression drugs are safe but can cause sleep disturbances, weight gain and/or sexual dysfunction. Traditional drugs can interfere with the proper development of the fetus. Getting of the medication and undergoing TMS therapy you can safely treat your depression and have a safe pregnancy.
